More than you ever wanted to know about Ron

Ron has been very involved in our schools and other public service.

Ron was President of the George Mason High School PTSA in Falls Church, VA. Ron also was on the naming committee for the new Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.  Prior to coming to Falls Church,  the PTA Council of Frederick County made Ron an honorary Lifetime Member of the Maryland State PTA.  Ron has also served on the boards of other PTAs over the years.

From 1997-2004, Ron served on the Board of Education of Frederick County, MD, a county-wide school system in a rapidly growing county with approximately 40,000 students, an annual operating budget of $400 million, and a capital budget that included the construction of a new school or major addition every year that Ron served on the board.

Ron was both elected and appointed to the board. He was originally appointed by Governor Glendening.  When the voters changed the system to an elected board, Ron won one of three open seats (among 18 candidates).  Ron served from July 1999 to December 2003 as President of the Board.  Prior to that, Ron served as Vice President of the Board and Chairperson of the Curriculum Committee.  Ron was the Board liaison to the Minority Affairs Committee (which later became the Education that is Multicultural Committee), and to the Career and Technology Advisory Committee.   Return to top

At the state level, Ron served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education.  He has spoken at state conferences on continuous improvement, board development, and the use of technology.

Ron has been involved in community activities

Prior to the school board, Ron served for four years on the Frederick County Advanced Life Support Advisory Committee.  Ron knows about the need for services and the budget realities, and the pressures from the demands for emergency services in a growing community.

Ron was also active in the local bar association, and a member of the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Ron has served on the boards, including terms as president, vice-president and secretary of several homeowners associations in large, mixed-use developments.

Ron is an attorney (and a techie!)

Ron is the General Counsel and Vice President Human Resources (and Secretary!) for Canam Steel Corporation.  Canam is the US division of an international company that operates plants that produce steel building components, provides engineering services, and fabricates and erects large scale construction projects such as stadiums, office buildings, convention centers and highway bridges.  Ron manages Canam’s legal work, human resources and compliance in the United States, and assists with international issues.

From 2004-2006, Ron was Vice President, Law and Technology for the Association of Corporate Counsel in Washington, DC.  Ron managed the parts of the association that develop, maintain and publish content for members in print and electronic format, as well as the association's conferences and continuing legal education. He also oversaw web services and technology for the association.

Before that, Ron was Vice President and Associate General Counsel for the Prudential Home Mortgage subsidiary of Prudential Financial.

When Ron was in private practice, he was a bond lawyer, and spent most of his time working on financial transactions for local and state government agencies, economic development authorities, and for hospitals and universities.  Ron understands municipal finance, budgets, and public projects (if you want to know more about solid waste, water and sewer, streets and sidewalks and the like, just ask!)  Return to top

Ron admits that in private practice and at Prudential he worked on mortgage and other asset securitization, including sub-prime lending programs.

Ron went to school for a long, long time (at least, it felt like it)

Ron earned his law degree at the University of Maryland School of Law, where he was the Notes and Comments Editor of the Maryland Law Review.  He also earned a Master’s Degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, “With Distinction” (Honors), and an undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University.  Ron was one of the first 100 Maryland Distinguished Scholars, an annual scholarship provided by the State of Maryland to the top 100 students in the state.  Return to top

Ron spends his free time working out (sort of vital after a Board meeting)

If you want to talk to Ron face to face, most evenings you can find Ron at the gym (usually the Seven Corners branch of Fitness First).  Return to top
